Day 9 of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics

What we covered

  • A hearing will take place today regarding Kamila Valieva's positive drug test, with results expected Monday. The 15-year-old Russian figure skater failed a test taken in December ahead of the Beijing Olympics.
  • US speed skater Erin Jackson won gold in the women's 500m after almost missing the Olympics because of a slip in US qualifiers. Her teammate, Brittany Bowe, gave up her own spot to ensure the world No. 1 made it to Beijing.
  • Heavy snow and poor weather conditions forced several events to be postponed -- including the women's slopestyle qualifying, which was moved from Sunday to Monday. China's star freeskier Eileen Gu will be the name to watch in the event as she looks to score back-to-back golds.

It's the end of Day 9 of the Beijing Winter Olympics and a lot has happened: Olympic records have fallen, gold medals aplenty have been won, snow has delayed and postponed competition... and a lot of memorable quotes have been uttered. Check out some of the best from Sunday:

“The sheep would do their business when we weren’t there. A rainy night and you'd get a lot of splatters. It was horrible.”
British skier Dave Ryding on the not-so-dry slope he trained on in rural England.

“When I travel, I have one bag with the equipment. And then I have another bag filled just with my bread.”
Norwegian cross-country skier Johannes Høsflot Klæbo on traveling with his grandma's loaves to combat gluten intolerance.

“He is not just a slug that is big.”
Slovakia ice hockey coach Craig Ramsay on 17-year-old Juraj Slafkovský, who stands at 1.92m.

“It's all white. I can't eat spaghetti (in it). It's fast.”
Mexican skier Rodolfo Dickson on his wrestling-inspired race suit ... which is built for speed and not the dinner table.

American Erin Jackson wins women's 500m speed skating gold

US speed skater and world No. 1 Erin Jackson won the women's 500m gold medal in a time of 37.04 – 0.08 seconds ahead of Japan's Miho Takagi.

The 29-year-old is the first American to win since Bonnie Blair did so at the 1994 Winter Games. She is also the first Black woman to win an Olympic gold medal in speed skating. Jackson finished 24th in this event at PyeongChang 2018.

"I wish I could describe how I feel. It is amazing. This medal means so much," Jackson said after the race. "It has been a tough couple of years and a tough beginning for this year. For this to come around like this, I am so happy.

"I cried immediately, it was just a big release of emotion. A lot of shock, a lot of relief and a lot of happiness. I haven't fully processed everything quite yet, but it just feels amazing."

Jackson almost missed the Olympics after she had slipped during qualifying trials, but her teammate Brittany Bowe gave up her own spot to ensure the world No. 1 was able to go to Beijing – and it paid off.

"I came into our Olympic trials kind of expecting to qualify easily. Unfortunately, I didn't qualify. At the time, we only knew of having two Olympic spots (in the 500m) and I placed third.

"My teammate Brittany Bowe was amazing, very selfless. She sacrificed her spot to help me get on the time. I was really grateful for her doing that and then luckily we ended up getting that third spot, so then she was able to race as well.

"It was just amazing having her out there on the ice. We could just be happy together after the race. She hugged me, said she is really proud of me, and I just said a lot of thank yous.

"At the time when she gave up her spot, she didn't know we were getting a third one, so she made a really big sacrifice for me, and I will be grateful to her forever."

This is Team USA's sixth gold medal and 12th overall at the 2022 Winter Games.

Angelina Golikova of the Russian Olympic Committee earned bronze.

The snow may be causing chaos on the competition side of things at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, with multiple events being delayed or postponed due to heavy snowfall in Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, but workers are finding the silver lining of competitive delays in their downtime.

Creating snowmen, snow bunnies and other wintery wonders, Olympic volunteers and workers are taking full advantage of the first snowfall of these Winter Games so far.

Many of the volunteers and workers in the Zhangjiakou area are students at a local ski school, so their love of the snow is understandable and all too relatable.

Hungarian short track speed skater Shaoang Liu won the men's 500m gold in comfortable fashion, leading from the start of the race and utilizing perfect strategy to win in a time of 40.33.

Defending world champion Liu held off the European champion, Konstantin Ivliev of the Russian Olympic Committee, by 0.12 seconds to win Hungary's first gold medal of these Games – and the country's first individual Winter Olympics gold medal ever.

"Our country is very small and we don't have much people. I hope this medal will bring the Hungarian people together, bring some pride to my country," Liu said after the historic race. "I'm speechless at the moment, I don't have any emotions. Maybe in two hours, I will think, 'Oh my god.'"

Liu – who has Chinese ancestry – was spurred on by the cheers of the local Beijing crowd and says that it made a difference in his performance.

"It's crazy, the Chinese fans, they are really supportive. Everyone is cheering for us here, and this brings joy to my heart."

Canada's Steven Dubois took the bronze for his second medal of these Olympics after winning the silver medal in the men's 1,500m on February 9.

The Netherlands have bagged a sixth gold medal of the Games with victory in the women's 3,000m short track speed skating relay.

The team of Suzanne Schulting, Selma Poutsma, Xandra Velzeboer and Yara van Kerkhof broke their own Olympic record from four years ago in Pyeongchang with a time of 4:03.409 ahead of South Korea in second and China in third.

"It's really special we trained really hard for this. We knew we were so good this season. We are so happy that we did it here," van Kerkhof said.

For Schulting, it's a second gold of the Games – and third medal overall. She added: "It's not only me, it's Selma, Xandra and Yara. We all did a great job. I was actually so happy we were able to do it.

"I realized real quick (when I crossed the line), we became Olympic champions. I am so proud of the girls. They did an amazing job. We did it."

That makes it 12 medals for the Netherlands at the Games so far – third in the table behind Norway and Germany.

France's Quentin Fillon Maillet wins second gold of Beijing 2022

Quentin Fillon Maillet clinched his second gold medal of Beijing 2022 in some style, finishing 28.6 seconds clear of his closest competitor in the men's pursuit.

"I'm so proud of myself because today, the conditions were so hard – windy, snowing," Fillon Maillet said, "It was a very, very hard fight during all the race."

It's been an incredible Games for the French cross-country skier, who has already been crowned Olympic champion in the 20km individual event and collected silver medals in the 10km sprint and the mixed relay.

"I never expected to have four medals in four races," he said. "My goal, it's to have one in relay and one in individual, but right now, I have four medals and that's incredible."

Nobody could get close to Maillet, with Norway's Tarjei Bø in silver – adding to the gold and bronze he's already picked up in Beijing – and Russian Eduard Latypov in bronze.

Qualification for the women's freestyle skiing aerials competition in Beijing has been postponed due to bad weather.

It joins a number of other events, including the women's freeski slopestyle qualifiers and the women's downhill training run, to be affected by heavy snowfall in Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, where most of the snow events are being held.

"FIS is proposing to reschedule the qualifications to tomorrow 15:00-16:30 [local time], with finals going down as originally scheduled at 19:00," governing body FIS said about the postponement of the aerials qualification.

It's the first time since the start of the Games on February 4 that Beijing has had snow.
