Booking a long-haul flight in business class can often seem out of reach for many travelers, but with the right combination of travel rewards and elite status perks, it’s possible to turn a budget-friendly economy fare into a luxurious business-class experience.

Case in point: I used American Airlines systemwide upgrades on a basic economy ticket to fly from Los Angeles (LAX) to New Delhi, India (DEL) via New York (JFK) in business class, all for a base fare of just $130. Along the way, I’ll share tips on how you can replicate this process yourself, complete with screenshots, photos and a detailed walkthrough.

What are American Airlines Systemwide Upgrades?

American Airlines Systemwide Upgrades (SWUs) are one of the most valuable perks of AAdvantage’s elite status. These upgrades allow you to confirm an upgrade from economy to business class — or from business class to first class — on any American Airlines flight, provided there is upgrade availability. You can also use SWUs on some British Airways tickets.

When you earn 175,000 American Airlines Loyalty Points in a status year, you can select two SWUs as your Loyalty Point Reward. You can also select two more SWUs when you earn 250,000 Loyalty Points and upon achieving higher Loyalty Point thresholds in the AAdvantage program — more information about this here.

I’m an Executive Platinum member with American Airlines who earned just over 250,000 Loyalty Points last year, so I selected four SWUs. I used one SWU to move to business class from LAX to JFK to DEL, as a single SWU can upgrade all eligible segments on a one-way ticket, up to a maximum of three flights.

These upgrades apply regardless of the fare class, meaning you can purchase a low-cost basic economy ticket and still enjoy a premium cabin experience if the upgrade clears.

How to check American Airlines Systemwide Upgrade availability

Using an SWU effectively depends on knowing how to find availability. American Airlines does not offer SWU availability on every flight, so it’s important to know how to check for upgrade space before booking. There are several ways to find SWU space:

  • AA.com: After logging into your AAdvantage account, if you have SWU(s) in your account, you’ll notice “Systemwide Upgrades” listed next to flight times that may have SWU availability. Keep in mind that you can only check for SWU availability on aa.com if you have SWUs in your account and are logged in.
  • Call American Airlines: AA phone representatives can check for SWU availability on American Airlines flights.
  • ExpertFlyer: Check for the “C” fare to move to business class and “A” fare to move to first class.

ExpertFlyer is a powerful tool for checking upgrade availability on American Airlines flights. When searching for available upgrades, you want to look for the “C” fare class, which designates that a business-class upgrade is available. You can also look for the “A” fare class, which indicates that a first-class upgrade is available.

Here’s what I did:

  • Log into ExpertFlyer and search for your desired American Airlines flight.
  • Filter by the “C” fare class under upgrade inventory to see if business-class seats are available for an SWU. We recommend checking for upgrade space on each leg individually. First, I found the “C” fare from LAX to JFK and then I found the “C” fare from JFK to DEL.
  • Book your economy ticket (in my case, a basic economy fare for $130) and immediately call AA to apply the SWU.

If the “C” fare class is open, your upgrade will be confirmed immediately. If not, you’ll be waitlisted, and your upgrade may clear closer to the flight, depending on business-class seat availability.

Seeing that the “C” fare class was available on both flights, I immediately booked the cheapest basic economy fare I could find, with a base fare of $130. I paid for my flight on my Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard®, which earns 4 miles per dollar on American Airlines purchases. Then, I called American Airlines to apply my SWU and secure the upgrade for my entire journey to India.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the cost of purchasing a business-class seat outright for this itinerary and was shocked to see it priced over $6,000. Talk about getting incredible value from a SWU!

What’s it like flying American Airlines business class to India?

Once my systemwide upgrade cleared, I was eager to experience American Airlines’ business class on the long-haul journey from Los Angeles to Delhi via JFK.

Both flights were in Flagship Business, which meant there were amenities like lie-flat seats, printed menus and amenity kits. The first leg, from LAX to JFK, was on an Airbus A321T in a 2-2 configuration, while the second leg from JFK to Delhi was on a Boeing 777-300ER in a more private 1-2-1 layout. Despite these premium configurations, both cabins felt somewhat dated. However, American Airlines is set to launch a refreshed business class.

For the second, longer flight, I chose a seat in the quieter mini-cabin, located just behind first class in rows 3 and 4. This area provided a more intimate atmosphere.

One of the highlights of the flight was the Casper bedding set, which included a duvet, mattress pad and pillow. This setup made sleeping much more comfortable. Another standout feature was the noise-canceling Bang & Olufsen headphones, which delivered excellent sound quality.

On the downside, the amenity kit was rather basic, and I found myself wishing the Nest slippers had enclosed toes. However, the eco-friendly Recliner pajamas, made from recycled materials, were a nice touch.

The meal service left a lot to be desired. The sundried tomato tartar was overly acidic, and the roasted chicken breast was disappointingly dry. Dessert options, including an ice cream sundae and a cheese plate, were more enjoyable. On the plus side, I managed to get about seven hours of sleep and woke up to a satisfying South Indian breakfast.

Bottom line

Upgrading from a $130 base fare basic economy ticket to a business-class experience for a long-haul flight to India was an incredible value made possible by American Airlines Systemwide Upgrades. While it requires a bit of planning and careful checking for upgrade availability, this experience is entirely replicable to enjoy the perks of premium travel at a fraction of the usual cost. By leveraging tools like ExpertFlyer, you can maximize the benefits of your SWUs and elevate your travel experience.

Regardless, it’s important to know the power of systemwide upgrades — they might just turn your next economy ticket into a business-class escape.
