Editors' Picks

Sometimes, everyday products our editors use don’t make it into our in-depth, long-form comparative pieces in which we vigorously test similar products head-to-head. That’s where our Editors’ Picks come in — where we highlight everyday products we personally stand by and use on a daily basis, and think you should, too.

In August, we were introduced to a plethora of products, from a very fancy trash can and ergonomic chair to the cutest dog hat in the world. Some were forgettable, while others left a lasting impression. Because we’re committed to spotlighting the best products out there, we’ve decided to curate roundups of our favorite products we try each month.

Keep reading to check out the products we tested and couldn’t get enough of in August, or look back at our favorites in July.

This is the first time in my entire life I’ve been excited about a trash can. After years of dealing with one that always accidentally locked when you closed it, it was definitely time for an upgrade. And if you know anything about trash cans, you know that Simplehuman is the cult-favorite everyone talks about. I had never tried it, though, and boy, was I impressed. The can comes with a built-in odor absorber, a sleeve for extra trash bags in the back and has remained positively pristine-looking since we opened it. I didn't know a bougie trash can existed, let alone one that felt like it was actually worth it, so consider me a convert. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

When our air conditioner tragically broke down a couple weeks ago, my first concern was the well-being of our precious cats, and my second was how I’d make it through the night without sweating through my mattress. The Coop+ Blanket could not have been more of a lifesaver. It’s made with a cooling poly-and-nylon-blend fill that’s said to boast features three times more cooling than that of bamboo or silk, and even in swampy conditions, it stays cool as a cucumber so the whole family ends up gravitating toward it. It’s pure witchcraft and a 10/10 necessity if you’re a hot sleeper. — Marissa Miller, contributing editor

When it comes to candle throw (i.e. how much the scent distributes within a given space) Snif’s candles take the cake. They’ve got a nice minimalist jar and complex, sophisticated aromas. I’ve been alternating Off the Grid and Birds and the Breeze pretty much anytime I’m home. They’re really that good. — Caroline Curran, deals editor

I’m not exaggerating when I say I debated this purchase for years, and I’m pleased to say the research — and hand-wringing — paid off. With limited space, a penchant for unusual sitting positions and utter distaste for ugly ergonomic office chairs (sorry!), I found the only chair that managed to fit the bill: the original kneeling chair from a Norwegian furniture brand called Varier. Expensive, yes, but if I’m working at a desk 40-plus hours a week, I want something that’ll encourage better posture, fit snugly under my desk, let me rock and fidget to relieve boredom — and look good to boot. — Caroline Curran, deals editor

Perfect for the beginner, at-home barista, the EspressoWorks espresso machine makes brewing a cup of coffee a breeze. I found the espresso maker easy to use and its assembly quick. The set includes an electric coffee bean grinder, ceramic cups, a milk pitcher to use with the frothing nozzle attachment, a portafilter and a scoop/tamper tool. I was able to make the perfect cup of espresso in a matter of minutes every single time and the cleanup is always quick and easy. — Rachel Dennis, editorial coordinator

The Laundress relaunched this year, and its Signature Detergent is a lovely option for those that want a more elegant formula than the typical laundry soap you’ll find at the drugstore. As an apartment dweller with a mini washing machine, it only takes a dash of the concentrated detergent for each load, so it’ll last me a long time. It leaves my clothes with a soft, clean scent. Plus, the bottle looks nice, so you won’t have an eyesore at your laundry station. — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

Pets

There are supposedly some practical benefits to Canada Pooch's canine bucket hats, but I'm gonna be real: I bought this strictly because I wanted to take hilarious pictures of my dog wearing Barbie-branded headgear. In addition to letting your dog rock their best Barbie pink, this hat helps protect their eyes from the sun and packs water-resistant fabric for rainy days. The patriarchy doesn’t stand a chance. — Mike Andronico, senior tech writer

Fashion

Surprisingly spacious, this structured bag has become one of my go-to “going out” bags. It’s made with embossed leather with a structured silhouette and looks sleek and stylish. I love that the bag is reminiscent of a Chinese takeout box, a fun design nod that has won the style awards. — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

A recent addition to Everlane’s footwear lineup, the Puffa Clog is the rare shoe that looks stylish while still allowing me to actually walk to dinner. (How stiletto-wearing New Yorkers do it, I’ll never understand.) At once resembling a cloud, a pastry and a cartoon Smurf’s shoe, the Puffa Clog is a worthy addition to your closet. Also worth noting: The clog adds about two inches to my height — I’m not short, but it’s nice to strut around feeling taller than usual. — Caroline Curran, deals editor

I work out regularly, but due to the fact that I am no longer a spring chicken, running has been nixed from my routine. Bad knees, a wonky back and all kinds of hip aches made me reassess my exercise regime, and now I focus on lifting weights and lower impact cardio such as biking, rowing and even dancing. Which also meant I had to trade in those running shoes for more appropriate footwear, and these Nike Free Metcon 5 shoes come laden with everything I need. Not only are they lightweight and stylish enough to walk around my Brooklyn hood but they offer excellent support around my ankle, a wider heel for stability when I’m lifting and the Nike Free technology for added flexibility. Nope, they aren’t the best for running longer distances, but I appreciate that they are made more for my specific lifestyle and look as good as they feel. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

Dainty and edgy at once, this top from For Love and Lemons has become an instant new favorite of mine. It’s made from 100% cotton so it’s breathable and lightweight enough to wear in August, but its long, puffed sleeve construction can take me straight into the fall. I truly love everything about this piece, but the vintage-looking bow eyelet details have got to be at the top of that list. — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Madewell has long been my denim go-to, but the brand’s new ’90s Straight Jean is truly next level when it comes to curve defining comfort. This pair fits me like a glove, and a touch of stretch makes them ultra wearable. I love the slightly vintage-y wash and classic straight cut — and am seriously thinking about throwing out all my other jeans in favor of these timeless ones. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

This satin headband — from the queen of hair accessories, Jennifer Behr — is so versatile and pretty, I literally can’t stop wearing it. Whether styled with a full-on Barbiecore pink look, dressed up for a wedding or paired with jeans and a tee, it adds a cute touch and makes any outfit feel pulled together. — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

Bombas is known for high-quality socks, but lately, it’s the brand’s underwear that’s gotten my attention. The Ribbed Seamless Briefs and Bralettes are soft, supportive and ultra breathable for summer. Yet another Bombas wardrobe basic I’ll be reaching for again and again. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

To me, the hallmark of a good outfit is a lack of fussiness, so jumpsuits are a no-brainer. This one (which makes me feel like a painter, in the best way) is perfect for any weather, since the fabric is lightweight (but blessedly not transparent) and layerable with an undershirt or jacket. All I have to do is throw on a pair of sneakers. — Caroline Curran, deals editor

I’m already a huge fan of Threads’ Reusable Nipple Stickies and have been trying out the brand’s Lifting Breast Tape this month. If you’re headed to a wedding this year or can’t figure out what to wear with strappy dresses or those that are backless, this does the trick. This tape is completely customizable and can be cut and stretched to achieve your desired look. It also stays in place but isn’t painful to take off. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I already own a bunch of athletic wear, but I felt especially guilt-free about adding another to my collection considering that 90% of this top is constructed of recycled plastic bottles. Besides being good for the Earth, this strappy tank in Racer features an ultra-light material that feels like it’s barely there and it’s also quick-drying, so I never feel drenched or gross after a sweaty workout. — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Beauty & health

As a very pale, redheaded person, I have to take sunscreen very seriously. This year I got super into Japanese and Korean sunscreens, and this one from Bioré Japan is my absolute favorite to use on my body. Particularly great for the décolletage, arms and legs, the gel-like serum goes on completely sheer, unscented and sinks in immediately. Plus, it’s got an SPF level of 50+. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

This heated eye massager was one product I wasn’t expecting to become obsessed with, but that’s exactly what happened. It combines compression massage, heat and vibration for a tension-relieving sensory experience. The massage is stronger than I anticipated and really works the temples and orbital area. The heat helps with dry eyes but also just creates a warm, cozy environment that has put me to sleep several times. It also plays a loop of relaxing music and sounds, or you can connect the device to the Renpho Health app and customize your music, along with all the other settings. My usual combo is heat and massage (no vibration), leaving me blissfully relaxed and renewed. — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

I’ve never thought about the toxins that are in tampons until I discovered women-owned, sustainably made brand August. Their tampons are made from 100% organic cotton and are also toxin-, chemical-, fragrance- and pesticide-free as well as hypoallergenic. They can hold up to 12 milliliters of liquid, and you can even build a box and customize it (like I did!) to include light, regular or super tampons and all types of pads for an added layer of insurance during that time of the month. After testing, I set up a reoccurring, monthly box subscription so that I never have to go back to buying questionable drugstore period products again! — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Billie is known for its razors, but I implore you to try out the brand’s Super Salve. This balm is super nourishing without being sticky. I love the subtle color and how moisturizing it is. They’re affordable enough that you can buy a bunch and put one in all your favorite bags so you’re never without it. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

Consider me extra, but I do not mess around when it comes to my skin health. That most definitely includes reusing regular hand or face towels that often harbors dirt and acne-causing bacteria even after washing it! Ick. So, I’ve turned to these ultra-soft, bio-based face towels that can be used wet or dry and help me to complete my entire skin care routine in the cleanest way possible. — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Merit’s new eyeshadows have a buildable, bendable cream-to-powder formula. What I love most about them is that they truly don’t budge once they’ve set (no creasing either!), so they are great for a day-to-night look that will last. The shadow comes in eight shades with a focus on neutral tones, plus a midnight blue and olive green. — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

New to the Shark hair tool collection, I got the chance to test the device out for myself this month, and it did not disappoint. The heated comb technology — which comes with three preset air temp settings — quickly took my hair from wet to dry and left me with a long-lasting, smooth, voluminous finish. After use, my hair didn’t feel dry and brittle, and there was absolutely no frizz in sight. — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Curly-haired brothers and sisters unite. This rich, nourishing butter slathers onto your curls so luxuriously, you’ll want to carry it around in your pocket for daily touch-ups. The secret is rainforest-grown Rahua oil, which not only moisturizes those locks but also gives a light hold to your mane and helps weigh down and manage those flyaways. And if you’re trying to manage humidity, this product may be your next best friend. After a week dealing with clouds and rain at my in-laws’ home in London this summer, I can personally vouch for this product — and for the first time, did not spend the entire time with my hair in a ponytail! — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

I rarely use foundation, especially in summer, but when I want a little bit of coverage, I love using the Daybird 4-in-1 Tinted Skin Care. It has SPF 50 (yay!) and acts as a serum, moisturizer and foundation too. I love that it’s a one-and-done product. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

With lots of events and weddings happening this summer, I’ve been on the hunt for quick and effective teeth whitening products. These two products from Moon have been quite possibly the most low-maintenance products I’ve tried that actually work — and that makes them winners in my book. I love that the serum comes in a tube with a doe foot applicator, like a lip gloss, that makes it easy and mess-free to apply. And on days when I’m feeling extra lazy, the whitening strips take two seconds to put on my teeth. Unlike others that have a gel on the back, these are completely dry and then activate once they are applied. I put them on right before bed so they dissolve and work their magic overnight. Then I just brush my teeth in the morning as normal. After a couple weeks of alternating the two (you can stick to one or the other as well — whatever floats your boat), I noticed my pearly whites were indeed noticeably whiter.  — Sophie Shaw, associate beauty editor

Another product that does it all is Dr. Loretta’s Universal Glow Daily Defense. I use this every day, and it feels so nice on my skin. I love that it doesn’t leave me oily and that it’s so much more than just an SPF. The packaging is amazing too because of the pump, so I just throw it in my bag and reapply when needed and I don’t have to worry about spills. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I finally got my hands on Clearstem’s viral collagen stem cell serum, and I can confirm it’s worth the hype … so far! Though I’ve only used it seriously for about a month, I’ve already noticed that it’s helped to regulate my hormonal acne and overproduction of oil, thanks to its key ingredients like saw palmetto, green tea and reishi mushroom. After consistent, prolonged use, I am hopeful I’ll see the clear, radiant and youthful skin that everyone on TikTok is talking about! — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

I have tried just about every under-eye product out there and can confidently say the Seratopical DNA Complex is one of my all-time favorites. This Nicole Kidman-approved product uses just one small pump to soften eye wrinkles and make dark circles disappear. I was truly shocked the first time I used it, not expecting to see immediate results. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

Packed with powerhouse ingredients like arnica and hyaluronic acid, this affordable eye cream has visibly reduced the appearance of my dark under-eyes in just shy of a month. It’s also left that area of my skin looking hydrated and dewy and feeling firmer and smoother than ever! As if it weren’t obvious, I’ll be adding this cream to my skin care routine for the foreseeable future. — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Formulated with fragrance-free and gentle ingredients including aloe vera, lactic acid and coconut, this gel-to-foam serum (for down there) acts as a barrier so that post-shaving irritation is officially a thing of the past. I have super-sensitive skin, and after use, I can confirm this really does work. I highly suggest you pair it with the best razor ever for the ultimate bump-free results! — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

After spending most of my life in the harsh Florida sun, I now opt to get my tan a healthier way. I recently fell in love with Saltyface’s entire line of self-tan products. They are so easy to use and deliver amazing results that are never orange or streaky. The facial Tanning Water is so amazing and innovative. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I’ve tried a bunch of different brow gels as a self-proclaimed beauty expert, and Ilia In Frame Brow Gel, which retails for $24, is one of the most natural-looking brands I’ve ever used! It’s also super lightweight, doesn’t budge and is formulated with actives that support fuller, healthier looking brows with every swipe. And if one thing’s for sure, I could definitely use all the brow support I can get! (Shoutout to anyone who overtweezed their brows in 2010.) — Stephanie Griffin, director of social

Tech

The Meta Quest 2’s built-in speakers have served me well for VR gaming and exercising for almost three years now, but after hearing lots of people talk about these made-for-Meta wireless earbuds, I had to see what the hype was about. The $80 Soundcore VR P10 buds connect to your headset via a high-speed USB-C dongle, which eliminates a lot of the nasty latency and interference that can come with Bluetooth. Between their imperceptible lag and comfortable design, I often forgot I was even wearing earbuds while hacking away at my intense Supernatural workouts. They’re also just a solid set of earbuds for when you’re out of your headset, with good sound, responsive controls and a robust companion app. If you want fuller audio or are just tired of annoying your housemates with the blaring sounds of virtual reality, these are worth a pickup. — Mike Andronico, senior tech writer

The tangled mess of cords in my home entertainment area used to disgust my tidier friends and family. Then I got shamed into finally finding a solution: these velcro cable ties by Wrap-It. While sold in many shapes and sizes, I recommend getting the set that comes in black and a variety of sizes. In no time at all I consolidated all kinds of cables, from HDMI to Ethernet, and the wraps visually disappeared because they matched the cord color. Also a must get for anyone who keeps putting off organizing their boxes of various cables. — Henry Casey, tech writer

Apple Watch sports band have never really lived up to my expectations – my wrist always ends up sweaty and irritated — but Twelve South has come up with the ideal solution. An Apple Watch sweatband. I purchased this at a discount during our annual Deals Fest event and have worn it during every workout since. The Action Band is soft, absorbent and machine-washable, and it just makes sense. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

My relationship with AirPods Pro is over; AirPods Max are my new best friend. Yes, I spent years going nowhere without Apple’s tiny lil buds, but its pricier cans became my new daily drivers this summer. It all began when an audiologist advised against overuse of in-ear headphones. Not only do my favorite songs from everyone from Charli XCX to Nine Inch Nails sound amazing on them, but they’re excellent for hearing TV shows and movies more clearly when the sounds of New York City traffic bleeds in from outside. I only go back to the AirPods Pro for the gym, since I don’t want to stink up the Max’s fabric cushions. — Henry Casey, tech writer

Though I got a fancy watch for my birthday this year, most of the time I still strap on my Apple Watch so I can record my steps and activity, and easily swipe for digital payments — all without wrangling my wallet or phone. Castefy’s new, super-comfy Flexi Band is crafted from recycled materials and was my band of choice this summer. It’s water and sweat resistant for swimming and daily workouts, plus it comes in a ton of different colors, textures and designs. I chose the Retro Baby Stripes for my 45mm Apple Watch, and it goes with pretty much everything. Of course, Casetify isn’t a total Apple snob; you can also nab these bands for Samsung’s Galaxy Watches as well. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

As phones get bigger and bags get smaller, this lightweight and simply designed crossbody iPhone case and wallet is a boon. Crafted from pebble leather with a striped strap and gold buckles, I just snapped my phone in the attached case, added my cards and IDs in the hidden wallet and headed out with nothing more to carry around or mess with. Perfect for the festival scene, it was also nice having less to tote around if I was just popping out for drinks or dinner. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

Food & drink

After receiving a box from grocery & recipe delivery service Hungryroot, I totally see the appeal of having fresh ingredients and recipes delivered to your door. My package arrived with everything needed to prepare three different meals (Curry Lemongrass Tofu Bowl with Superblend, Seared Salmon & Sweet Potato Mash, and Spicy Pulled Chicken Tacos) as well as a recipe sheet and snacks (the raspberry fig bars are a new favorite). True to the estimated 10-minute prep time, I was able to quickly whip up the spicy pulled chicken tacos before heading off to the airport. While you absolutely can enjoy the meal as is, I chose to add some additional toppings to my plate for extra flavor. — Rachel Dennis, editorial coordinator

After months of drinking pretty much nothing but Liquid Death — because sparkling water just tastes better from a cool-looking can with a skull on it — I decided to finally give the company’s iced teas a shot. They’re all great, but the perfectly named Armless Palmer flavor instantly shot up to the top of my rankings. It’s a great soda substitute when I’m craving something sweet with a meal, and at just 30 calories and packing natural agave and B vitamins, it's a heck of a lot healthier. — Mike Andronico, senior tech writer

If you want to try something other than the usual store-bought salsa brands, I highly recommend Somos. It is so flavorful and has just the right kick, your tastebuds will sing. I love how affordable it is without skimping on flavor and quality. My household is also currently addicted to the brand’s Salsa Macha. This sweet, spicy & crunchy Mexican chili crisp is perfect on tacos, rice, burritos, you name it. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I’m one of those extremely annoying Brooklyn people who, if a wine doesn’t have a cute label, I don't wanna drink it. It’s an illness I cannot cure. I tried these cans from Waves at a Dusen Dusen party (don't be jealous), and I’ve been hooked ever since. This particular pack gives you a sampling of all their flavors (white, rosé and red), all of which come with their own groovy designs from independent artists. I’m quite partial to the red, which is so nice to have just chilling in the fridge. — Rachel Lubitz, senior lifestyle editor

Carbone is famous in New York and on TikTok for its Spicy Rigatoni Vodka, and now the Italian restaurant has bottled its viral sauce so you can recreate the decadent meal at home. I mixed my jar in a saucepan with cream, as recommended on the label, and had myself a meal that was truly *chef’s kiss*. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

I love the idea of a wine club, but with so many out there to choose from, it can end up being overwhelming. Bright Cellars cuts through all the viticultural nonsense with a clutch of master wine experts (including master sommelier Catherine Fallis, just the fifth woman in the world to reach this status) to trust your picks to. And it’s affordable, with the first six bottles for just $60. Just take a quick quiz on your likes and dislikes, rate your wines as you get them and get 20% off future bottles as well as access to curated bundles — like this end-of-summer Pink Drink Box (vive le rosé). — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor

I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m kinda a water snob. While I am grateful to always have drinkable tap water available, there are still plenty of chemicals found in water from our sink. If I’m unsure where I can get water when I’m out and about, I love having a bottle of Open Water on me. These refillable aluminum bottles are endlessly recyclable and are the perfect size for any bag. As for the taste? Fresh, crisp water that has no aftertaste. I’d take this over single-use plastic bottles any day. — Lindsey Smith, associate editor

I never thought of myself as a granola person. Turns out I was just eating the wrong granola. Where most granola I’ve tried is too hard or crumbly, Tom’s Perfect 10 is just the right texture and makes for the perfect yogurt topping or just a midday snack on its own. In addition to two mainstay flavors, the brand comes out with new flavors monthly — I tried this month’s dessert-inspired Berry Shortcake, which is a perfect balance of sweet and tart flavors — and I’m seriously considering becoming a Granola of the Month subscriber to see what they come up with next. — Chelsea Stone, senior editor

Nothing like whipping up a homemade batch of delicious, infused cocktails for your next gathering — and this pre-measured mix of ingredients is a great choice for all you like-minded DIY-ers. The Crew Infusions Bundle comes with everything you need to create a tasty, layered cocktail just like a seasoned bartender, and I opted for the Apple Berry Mojito with an eye toward cooler temp. The bundle comes with a bottle, the infusion kit, a pour spout and a pour cover. Just mix the ingredients with the spirit of your choice (I chose rum), throw it in the fridge for three days, then pour. You can also nab it in a Spicy Margarita, Old Fashioned and Lavender Lemonade. — Tobey Grumet, reviews editor
