The word Alex Morgan keeps coming back to is “balance.”
Every day, the US Women’s National Soccer Team captain must gear up physically, emotionally and mentally as she prepares to compete in her fourth FIFA Women’s World Cup in July. But this time, she’s also in 24/7 mom mode, thanks to her three-year-old daughter Charlie.
“My body is feeling good, but I need to make sure that I take time for myself and not feel too overwhelmed,” says Morgan. “I’d say my daily routine is very different compared to most of my teammates who don’t have kids. It’s not just about me anymore, right?”
That’s why Morgan says she’s grateful for her longtime partnership with Orgain, a nutrition brand that specializes in plant-based, non-GMO protein supplements. “I’m on this journey of motherhood and being a professional athlete, so it’s really good to have that boost of energy both on and off the field,” she explains.
Ahead, Morgan shares eight of her everyday essentials with CNN Underscored.
“Keeping my skin hydrated is just as important as keeping myself hydrated!” says the soccer star. Morgan certainly needs to cover up, as she explains that she’s “constantly outside” for practice and at the park with Charlie. (Of course, she also applies the lotion to her daughter.) This water- and sweat-resistant product protects the skin from ultraviolet rays for up to 80-minute increments.

When it comes to charging her iPhone, Morgan feels the need for speed — and this charger will power her device up to 60% in just 30 minutes. “I need it to be fast,” she says. Indeed, because she’s on the road so often, “I like to stay connected with my family and be able to stay on top of work off the field. Even with such a busy schedule, it’s important that I still take time to check in.”

Not only does Morgan mix this no-sugar-added powder — which has 21 grams of protein per serving — into her own beverage, but she does the same for Charlie. “My daughter literally asks me for a smoothie every single morning because she loves it so much,” Morgan says. For a nutritional boost, Morgan blends the drink with berries and “sometimes” spinach. “If I’m lucky,” she adds, “she doesn’t notice it.”
Morgan splurged on her favorite tech product, which features super-fast connectivity and a state-of-the-art Retina display, for a good reason. “I am always traveling, so having a large iPad with me is critical because I usually download our games right after we finish and watch and analyze a lot of clips,” she explains. Besides, she adds, “I can’t really sleep after a game, so it’s a nice way to close the loop on the last game and look forward to the next one.”

Sorry, Charlie. That fancy iPad is off-limits! “I try not to give my daughter any electronics because that’s too easy,” she says. Morgan always keeps coloring books and washable markers in her bag and in the car as a playtime alternative. “She doesn’t color on the walls yet, so she still gets markers,” she says. “She may get downgraded to crayons soon.”
There’s no way this pro athlete skimps on hydration. “I always have water with me,” says Morgan, who has partnered with the sports drink brand. “I drink tons, especially because I’m often outside in the sun.”
This daily nutritional supplement from Thorne is packed with calcium, zinc, biotin and magnesium. It’s no wonder Morgan plans to pack a bottle when she heads to New Zealand for the World Cup. “Having a multivitamin is great because I can easily throw some in my bag and take them on the go if I have an early morning or [I'm] traveling,” she says.
Before a grueling training session, Morgan likes to grab her sleek headphones, which provide 40 hours of listening time, and zone out. “I listen to my pump-up playlist to help boost my energy and motivate me to bring my A game,” she says. Some of her favorites include “Calm Down” by Rema and Selena Gomez, “Trustfall” by Pink and Taylor Swift’s “Lavender Haze” and “Bejeweled.”
