As boring as it sounds, the best wedding gift will be from the couple’s wedding registry. But when a couple doesn’t have a wish list, their gift ideas are out of your price range or you want to get them something extra, you’ll need to think carefully — or else your present could end up in the regifting pile.
To ensure that doesn’t happen, we consulted wedding experts, combed the internet and considered products we’ve tested to come up with a list of wedding gifts couples will actually want.
Don’t worry, you don’t have to spend $300 on a stand mixer (though that is an option), because we’ve got recommendations for every budget. But before we regale you with Dutch ovens and knife sets, we’ll answer a few common wedding gift questions.
How to pick a great wedding gift
“Stick to the registry when one is provided!” says Alexa Farese of The Wedding Planner FLA. Farese explains that since couples put a lot of time into curating their wish list, choosing something from the registry guarantees they’ll get what they want.
But if you can’t use the wish list, or the couple doesn’t provide one, Julia Sabatino, wedding stylist and founder of The Stylish Bride, says you should carefully consider what the couple enjoys, and pick a gift based on their hobbies and interests.
“If you are wanting to do something extra or outside of a registry, money is always a great option for a couple just starting out their lives together,” Farese adds. Experience gifts, such as a gift card for a couples massage or cooking class, can be excellent too, she says.
How much to spend on a wedding gift
Farese says that on average people spend around $100 per person on wedding gifts, though “your relationship with the couple can impact this.” If, for example, you’re distant friends, strapped for cash or both, then you can spend less. But for a close friend or relative, “spending a little more is a nice show of enthusiasm and support as they enter this new chapter of their lives.”
However much you shell out, Sabatino says that you should also include a personal message with your gift. “The thought and sentiment behind the gift matter much more than its price tag.”
Ahead, you’ll find the best wedding presents at a variety of price points, whether you’re shopping for your best friend, niece or a coworker you’ve barely spoken to.
