Suede
For a cozier take on glossy leather, we’re lining our wardrobes with all things suede. “Suede is a timeless fabric for the fall but also happens to be very on trend this season,” says Megan LaRussa Chenoweth, style coach at Style Yourself Chic.
How to best nail the trend? “As an accent or complement to your ‘fit,” says fashion expert, stylist and author of “You Can’t Leave the House Naked,” Lindsey Bernay. “A bomber-style suede jacket or cool bag adds texture to your look and pairs perfectly with your favorite fall tones.” Additionally, Alexa Rittman, Amazon fashion and style expert, says you want to look for boots, bags and belts to introduce the trend with subtlety.
You’re due for a more practical and spacious tote bag for work anyway, so you may as well shop it in an on-trend material. “This suede tote bag is versatile for everyday wear,” Bernay says. “The style is sophisticated yet modern, and the tote is roomy enough to hold all your essentials.”
Bernay specifically recommends this motorcycle jacket in the hunter-green suede color since it “creates a luxe fall vibe when paired with chocolate-brown trousers, a cream sweater or classic denim,” she says. “The moto jacket’s edgy cut and ultra-soft suede fabric creates the perfect balance of rocker chic.”
Rittman loves this suede belt for fall, and it’s not hard to see why. It comes in an impeccably refined taupe hue (plus tons of others to choose from) along with elegant gold-toned hardware to jazz up any outfit.
“My favorite suede item this season is a suede skirt,” LaRussa Chenoweth says. “We’re seeing both pencil and A-line silhouettes, which means there’s something for everyone.” This paneled option will look great styled with your fall boots.
Leopard print
As you may have noticed throughout the years, leopard print popularity tends to dip and peak. This fall, it’s back with a vengeance. “I find my personal-styling clients either love or hate animal print, so if it’s your vibe, this is a great time to snap up some fresh pieces,” LaRussa Chenoweth says. She adds that it looks best in small doses like a belt, sneakers or a blouse, but can work equally well on a larger scale like a dress. For extra longevity, she recommends opting for an animal print in a classic brown or black.
Not ready to venture into the animal kingdom just yet? A splash of the pattern will do just fine. “Tie this leopard-print scarf around your favorite handbag or wear it with a monochromatic look to add a fun pop of pattern without overwhelming your outfit,” Bernay says.
Rittman recommends these jeans that check numerous trend boxes this season: a bold leopard print, a lower-rise waistband and a laidback barrel silhouette.
Cozy up in this mid-weight leopard dress LaRussa Chenoweth recommends, perfect for chilly fall evenings. Plus, the wine and blue color offers a unique take on the trend that’s anything but boring.
There’s a certain thrill inherent in rocking flats for as long as you can before the snow sets in. “These sleek, slingback flats add a subtle touch of leopard to your outfit,” Bernay says. “Perfect to pair with denim or your favorite fall dress, the pointed toe and adjustable ankle straps make these shoes a fall must-have.”
Deep red
Think of the color of mulled wine. Now infuse that deep and jewel-toned red tint into your fall wardrobe to make up for all that lost time we spent on sad beige. “Berry hues such as reds, wines and deep burgundies are the perfect colors to incorporate into your wardrobe this fall,” Bernay says. “These tones make for the perfect outerwear or accessory, and you can even use it as a way to have fun with berry colorblocking.”
So, what’s the best way to get in on the style? LaRussa Chenoweth recommends going with a tonal look. That might look like a cranberry-colored jean paired with a rich red sweater. “I would then keep the shoes and accessories neutral [where] brown and golden tones look best for a pulled-together look,” she says. “If you’re going with more of the deep burgundy and wine tones, you can pair them back with black and silver accessories.”
It’s not a proper fall wardrobe without cable-knit sweaters in every color under the (early setting) sun. Rittman recommends this oversized stunner in a berry shade. Wear it with leggings, jeans or cargos that are equally as baggy.
“These Dolce Vita sneakers are my current favorite, and in Cranberry Suede they make for the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe,” Bernay says. “The Notice sneakers come in many colors, but the berry shade is luxe and easy to wear. It’s perfect for a workday that turns into dinner.”
According to Bernay, burgundy makes for the ideal outerwear hue. “Try layering a wine-colored faux-fur coat over neutral looks or pairing it with jeans and a patterned blouse for a pop of rich color,” she says.
These gorgeous burgundy faux-leather boots Rittman recommends prove you don’t need to spend a lot to look really ridiculously put-together this fall.
Metallics
Make your ‘fit infinitely more interesting with a splash of metallics. “It’s such a cute way to add depth and interest to a basic look,” Rittman says. From earrings to flats, you can easily spruce up your look head to toe by incorporating small splashes of silver or brightly colored metals, or going bold with a substantial piece, like a bag or blazer.
Rittman recommends these chunky knotted earrings that make a dramatic statement. Notice how they don’t take on the chandelier earring silhouette of yore and instead stay close to the earlobe for a more tailored and streamlined look.
Between the hobo style and the metallic hue for a pop of visual interest, this bag instantly adds some pep to your dreary fall outfit. Play it safe in the silver color or make a splash in metallic green or pink.
Picture these pretty and pleated palazzo pants in a swath of festive metallic hues paired with a cropped or oversized sweater. Maybe a pair of Sambas or a pointed ballet flat below. Chef’s kiss.
Rittman suggests styling your fall outfit with these on-trend Franco Sarto flats boasting an adjustable strap and modern square toe. Sans heel, they elevate any fall date night or office look without the foot discomfort associated with sky-high heels.
Chocolate brown
Remember when black was as ubiquitous as, say, the fall night’s sky? Now it’s brown’s turn to shine. “Chocolate brown is everywhere and a major color staple this year,” Bernay says. It boasts a touch more visual interest than black, lightens the mood and pairs perfectly with colors like blue and pink for a more retro ’60s vibe. Wear it head-to-toe as a matching athleisure set (think: leggings and a fitted zip-up or cargos and an oversized hoodie). Like its name suggests, chocolate brown is just so sweet to wear all season, any time of day.
Between its cozy mock neck to its elegant vertical hem to elongate the body, this matching set is as perfect for kicking your feet up indoors as it is hitting the town on a picturesque fall day. Style it with your favorite leather boots and bag for a more structured look — and don’t forget to accessorize with metallic details.
Thanks to its rich chocolate hue, hardware and stitching, this cardigan looks far more expensive than it actually is. “Drape this over your shoulders for warmth and style,” says Bernay. “It’s the perfect item for a color blocking look or adding an accent to a monochromatic outfit.”
Rock the brown look in the coziest way possible: in a pair of open-toe slides that’ll actually look bomb (not nerdy!) with a pair of wool socks on. “Faux-fur sandals like these are great for home and out and about,” Bernay says. “Faux fur is trending for the transition from summer to fall, and this is a great shoe for the transition to the fall season.”
