As far as wardrobe staples go, bodysuits are among the most versatile. Like a plain white tee, a bodysuit can be paired with virtually anything. But even better than a T-shirt, the one-piece will always stay tucked and give you a smooth silhouette.
“I think of the bodysuit as a blank canvas and build the outfit from there,” says New York City-based fashion stylist Audree Kate López. They’re an amazing base layer under any bottoms, and look super polished layered under a blazer or denim jacket.

What to look for in a bodysuit
When shopping for a bodysuit, there are two main factors to look for: comfort and style. López says to consider fit and silhouette. “[A bodysuit] should fit snugly across your body, not baggy, loose or too stretched out across your chest or too tight in the bikini area,” she says.
López offers some other important considerations too: “Do you want a bodysuit that snaps in the crotch so you can go the bathroom without completely getting naked? Do you need wider straps to support your chest or a wider gusset or thong for comfort?,” she explains. “These small details can make a huge difference in your bodysuit being something that sits in your dresser or being a wardrobe staple.”
As for style, the world is your oyster. “Bodysuits come in different cuts, like V-neck or scoop neck, and even turtleneck,” says Cindy Conroy, celebrity stylist and TV personality. “Each style pairs with clothing differently, so you want to choose one that represents your personal style and makes you feel most comfortable.” She likes to pair hers with a chic pair of jeans or leather pants. López adds that bodysuits work especially well with high-waisted bottoms since they create a seamless “tucked-in” effect.
Best bodysuits
Conroy says this T-shirt bodysuit from Skims "gives body contouring to the 9th degree!" She loves the super soft fabric, which is also a selling point for associate testing writer Carolina Gazal who says, "The material is incredibly stretchy, supportive and surprisingly breathable." This style is also one of López's picks, who adds that the seamless lining means you won't have any harsh panty lines to worry about.
López says to look to lingerie, undergarment and shapewear brands for quality bodysuits, "because they really just get it when it comes to fit, design and silhouette." She loves this tummy-smoothing Spanx option that comes in black and white, and sizes XS to 3X.
Ambercrombie is an editor-favorite brand for bodysuits. It has a great selection of necklines and sleeve lengths to choose from, so you can find one for any season. "They’re [made with] a really durable material and give you that held-in feel," says editorial director Chelsea Stone. This smooth and simple style is one of her top picks.
"If you want great basics, undergarments and wearable shapewear, Commando is great," López says. "The Butter Long Sleeve Bodysuit is my go-to layering piece for fall and winter. It's super lightweight and pairs well with any pant or dress you have in your closet."
For a sleeveless style, López recommends Commando's tank silhouette, which comes in seven colors. "The hip sits lower on your body and is a raw edge so you have a seamless finish and no panty line," she explains.
Home and gifts editor Amina Lake Abdelrahman has five bodysuits from Abercrombie & Fitch in various styles, but this one is her absolute favorite. It features a flattering square neck and is made with a brushed jersey that feels super comfy as it hugs your body.
We tested this budget-friendly option and found it to be a worthy alternative to Skims. The double-lined style means you can go braless and the stretchy material is super comfortable. Plus, it comes in dozens of colors, including some more vibrant hues.
Available in two height options, three sleeve lengths and three coverage options, Aritzia has thought of it all when it comes to a comfortable fit. Director of social Stephanie Griffin has this bodysuit in every color — it comes in almost 20 colors — and says it's a superior choice.
"[This] is such a wonderful option if you are looking for a curve-hugging, shape-enhancing and confidence boosting essential for your wardrobe," Conroy shares. The sleek bodysuit is made with a smooth scuba material. However, beware that this pick isn't as stretchy as some other options on this list and may not suit longer torsos.
López is also a fan of Good American's scuba bodysuits, preferring this short sleeve option. It's available in sizes XS to 5XL, so the stylist calls out that it's a "great option for extended to plus sizing."
"I have had a black Everlane bodysuit for over six years and it has held up in quality, shape and is one of the most comfortable bodysuits I own," López says. This sleeveless style, which is also one of associate editor Lindsey Smith's favorites, comes in your choice of a thong or bikini cut, factoring in your comfort level too.
While the exact Free People off-the-shoulder bodysuit I own is no longer available, this style from its in-house label is nearly identical. I also recommend checking out Free People's selection of bodysuits because it has a lot less-basic options that feature pretty details like lace fabrications and fun silhouettes.
For fall and cooler weather, senior lifestyle editor Tamara Kraus loves wearing this hybrid sweater bodysuit. "I like that the material is a little thicker so it doesn't feel flimsy, but it's still comfy and not too heavy," she notes.
