Sofia Tilbury

Red wine makeup is the fall makeup trend we’re excited to bring into the holiday season. With red hues reminiscent of your favorite vino, this look is all about channeling the sultry allure of sipping on a glass of red wine during a night out.

Not only is the trend great for date night, but it totally makes sense for the season. “This trend is a TikTok fave because its rich, vibrant colors perfectly match fall’s cozy, warm vibes,” Neen founder and celebrity makeup artist Jeanine Lobell says. “Think about it: Those deep reds and purples aren’t just about wine, right? They’re colors we’re seeing everywhere!”

Plus, it’s more than just a makeup look; the “red wine girl” has become a whole aesthetic defined by elegance and fine taste. Think rich tones to match rich vibes. As Lobell says of the makeup look, “Its universally flattering look offers a pop of boldness that can elevate any look.”

So, if you want to level up your fall ensembles, consider trying out red wine makeup — it’s easier than you think. When broken down, the steps to achieve the wine makeup trend are actually quite basic. Don’t believe me? Ahead, three makeup artists walk us through how to re-create their easy takes on the trend. Cheers!

Red-hot red wine makeup with Charlotte Tilbury

Celebrity makeup artist Sofia Tilbury turns up the heat with her version of the wine makeup look. A red lip that incorporates the warm brown tones of fall gives it a seasonal spin, while a neutral smoky eye balances it out.

Even if you’re not usually a fan of red lipstick, you can tone down the look and adapt it. “This look is great if you’re not super comfortable with a bold red or berry-toned lip — you can press the shades on for a stained effect, and then pair it with your favorite nude-brown lip liner and neutral-toned eyeliners for a soft, romantic effect that still captures that autumnal vibe,” she shares.

Tilbury's first tip for creating a red wine makeup look is to spend time focusing on your skin prep. The Magic Water Cream is a lightweight gel-cream moisturizer that helps prime the skin. "You want your complexion to be fresh, hydrated, flawless and glowing," she says.

This medium-coverage foundation hides imperfections while giving a glowy, natural-looking finish. It's Tilbury's go-to for balancing the complexion.

A subtle brown smoky eye pairs beautifully with a red wine lip, letting the deep red be the star of the show. Tilbury recommends dusting the eyelid with this neutral-toned palette and topping it with the brand's cream eye shadow in Oyster Pearl for luminosity.

To finish the eyes, the Pillow Talk mascara creates fanned-out, volumized lashes that will last all day and night.

"When you drink wine, your lipstick transfers onto the glass and softens from the center out," Tilbury explains. "To cheat that ombré look, overline your lips at the Cupid’s bow and center of the lower lip." Color-wise, the makeup artist says to go with a deep brown shade like Foxy Brown, Iconic Nude or Pillow Talk Intense, or a reddish-brown like Hollywood Honey, to complement your red lip shade.

"I love a bold lip for autumn/winter, and red wine makeup is such a wearable way to incorporate some of our iconic red lipstick shades like Red Carpet Red, Walk of No Shame and So Red into your routine," Tilbury says.

Tilbury finishes the look with matte blush on the apples of the cheeks. "This is an easy way to make your skin look more natural and youthful, and it can help soften the smokiness of the eye and wine-stained lip. Super flirty and fun!" she says.

Adding a touch of the Beauty Light Wand highlighter on top of the cheekbones pulls the whole look together.

Divine wine makeup with Bobbi Brown

“Every detail of wine makeup, from wine-colored lips to accents of wine-colored eye shadow, is what makes this trend so exciting to re-create,” Sabena Collier, Bobbi Brown Cosmetics resident artist, says. From vampy merlot to vibrant pinot noir, the shade of red wine can be tailored to your taste. Just remember: “This trend is a whole vibe and is super sexy,” so don’t be afraid to amp up the drama.

"Wine makeup gives a luxurious feel when paired with healthy-looking skin," Collier says. To get a glowing base, the makeup artist suggests prepping the skin by applying a mix of the Face Base and Bobbi Brown's Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm.

For a natural and luminous finish, use a skin tint to even out the complexion. Collier says you can also layer the Bobbi Brown Skin Foundation Stick wherever you need a bit more coverage.

Start adding in wine-colored tones on the cheeks. The makeup artist loves the shade Velvet Plum for this look.

"Add Bobbi Brown's Highlighting Powder to the high points of the face, the inner corners of the eye and the center of the top eyelid to softly accent the eyes," Collier says.

To get va-va-voom lashes, two to three coats of this bestselling mascara should do the trick.

Add dimension to the lips by opting for a deeper lip pencil. MAC's Plum shade is rich and juicy, ideal for creating that wine-stained look.

Finish it off with a red or berry-toned lip of your choosing. Collier loves the Luxe Matte Lipstick in After Hours for her own red wine makeup, or you can opt for something darker like the shade Plum Brandy.

Wine-hued harmony with Neen

Lobell’s monochromatic wine makeup look is an easy way to master the rich tones of the trend. “Let the texture be your guide, so if you want a deep matte eye, pair it with a wine gloss to keep things fresh,” the Neen founder explains. Or, if you’re going for a deep burgundy lip, the makeup artist recommends opting for “a light rose-hued eye shadow” to keep things balanced.

“Play around with how bold or subtle you want to take this look,” Lobell says. “Since all these colors are in the same family, the balanced monochromatic wine look looks great on anyone.”

For the lips, Neen's ultra-shiny, creamy gloss comes in a perfect deep raspberry shade for your wine makeup look. The nonsticky formula is made with avocado and jojoba oils, so your lips will feel comfortable and conditioned too.

Lobell says to grab the Swoon Trio of the Pretty Shady palette for a rosy wine makeup eye. "Start by sweeping Swipe (the medium shade) all over the lid, wrapping a little into the lower lash line," the makeup artist says. "Then, take Mood (the darkest shade), blending it into the crease and as a smoky liner on top and bottom lashes, and lastly, add Blink (the shimmery shade) in the inner corner for a little shine."

To get "lots of lash," as Lobell says, you'll only need a coat or two of this volumizing mascara. It makes lashes appear thicker and fuller with its longwearing formula.

Coy, Babe and Pose are all berry-tinted shades of Neen's creamy lip and cheek color that would work beautifully for the wine makeup trend. Lobell says to apply it to the cheeks as well as a little dab on the lips (topped with Glisten Up) for depth.
