(CNN) Catastrophic flooding in portions of eastern Kentucky killed at least 38 people and the community is struggling to survive the aftermath which destroyed houses and businesses.
Heavy rains and floodwaters took residents by surprise starting the evening of July 27 with some houses completely lost to the waters in less than an hour. More than 9 inches of rain fell in some areas.
Governor Andy Beshear set-up the Team Eastern Kentucky Flood Relief Fund to help those impacted.
