A new chapter in space begins. See what's next

(CNN) Billionaire Jeff Bezos announces he's traveling to space, a "flight to nowhere" sells out in minutes and technology shows us the closest simulation to how a star is formed. See space's next chapter.

Billionaire in space

Amazon founder and CEO Jeff Bezos announced he will be on board his company Blue Origin's first crewed mission to space. The autonomous spacecraft called New Shepard has conducted over a dozen test flights without humans and is set to launch on July 20.

A star is born

Using one of the largest supercomputers in the world, scientists developed a colorful and stunning simulation of how the beginning of a star's life looks. They say previous models could only simulate a small patch of the cloud where a star forms. Scientists hope to use the tool to better understand the formation of galaxies and the universe.

'Flight to nowhere'

Adventurous travelers boarded a Qantas "flight to nowhere" to see a rare celestial phenomenon: a lunar eclipse and supermoon. The flight offered up-close views of the 14-minute event at 43,000 feet. Qantas' flights to nowhere were developed during the coronavirus pandemic after much of the carrier's fleet had been grounded for over a year.

Helicopter takes flight on Mars

Mission control erupted in cheers after NASA's Ingenuity makes history with the first powered flight on Mars. The tiny helicopter flew for about 40 seconds and reached an altitude of 10 feet.

Starship has landed

Fifth time's the charm! SpaceX successfully landed its rocket prototype during a quick test flight after previous attempts met fiery ends. The space company hopes the vehicle will one day carry people to Mars.
