Inside the Senate: Sketches from a dramatic Day 5 of the Trump impeachment trial

Washington(CNN) Senators voted on a surprise move by the House managers on Saturday to allow for witnesses in the impeachment trial of former President Donald Trump.

That created a long recess in which senators mingled as leadership, impeachment managers and lawyers for Trump discussed and agreed to add to the record the account of a phone call between Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, as recounted by a House Republican congresswoman.

However, the Senate controls the TV cameras in the chamber. The feed is turned off when the Senate is in recess, and when it is in session the cameras are most often kept with a tight focus on whomever is speaking.

Artist Bill Hennessy has been in the chamber all week and was able to see what happened during the recess and beyond. Here are his latest sketches:

Sen. Susan Collins, Sen. Lisa Murkowski, and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (seated, left to right) during a break in the impeachment trial.

Trump counsel Bruce Castor (seated) speaking with Sen. Rand Paul, R-Kentucky.

Several GOP seats remained empty as closing arguments began.

Senators discuss how to proceed with witnesses on February 13, 2021.
