(CNN) Elizabeth Warren's presidential campaign is set to announce on Friday that it has received more than 1 million donations this election, according to a forthcoming email to supporters shared with CNN.
The news comes on the heels of the Massachusetts Democrat announcing a significant fundraising haul of more than $19 million for the second quarter, and just days ahead of the second Democratic presidential debate in Detroit next week hosted by CNN. It will bolster the argument that the Warren team's big bet on small-dollar and grassroots fundraising is working -- the senator has vowed not to solicit money from wealthy donors, including in phone calls and fundraisers, during the primaries.
In the thank you and fundraising email, Warren's campaign manager Roger Lau touts what he calls a "100% people-powered campaign," and writes that the more than million donations is "exciting proof of the momentum that we see on the ground across the country."
"We just passed our one-millionth donation to this campaign -- it came from Caitlyn, an ESL teacher from Tennessee," Lau writes. "That's one million donations solely from grassroots donors. That means zero from closed-door fundraising events. Zero from Washington lobbyists. Zero from corporate PACs, or PACs of any kind."
The Warren campaign has previously said that some 384,000 people donated to the campaign in the second quarter.
The only Democratic candidate who has announced receiving over a million donations in the 2020 election is Sen. Bernie Sanders -- his presidential campaign touted this accomplishment in April. The Sanders campaign has also rejected high-dollar fundraisers.
At the end of the second quarter, former Vice President Joe Biden's campaign said it received around 436,000 donations from some 256,000 donors since entering the race weeks after the start of the second quarter. He raised a total of $21.5 million.
South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg's campaign -- which had the biggest overall second quarter fundraising haul of almost $25 million -- disclosed that over 400,000 people gave to their campaign in total this year. According to the campaign, it has received around 775,000 donations so far.
Meanwhile, Sen. Kamala Harris' presidential campaign said earlier this month that more than 279,000 people gave to her campaign in the second quarter, amounting to some $12 million. It has not released the number of donations received.
The numbers of donors giving to the Democratic candidates is being closely watched at this juncture in the election as an indicator of their political strength, and it is also being used as a measure to qualify for the debates. To participate in the third Democratic debate in September, a candidate must receive donations from 130,000 individual donors, and reach 2% in four qualifying polls.
