Czech opposition parties call for government no-confidence vote

(CNN) Five Czech opposition parties have declared they will call a vote of no confidence in Prime Minister Andrej Babis' government on Friday.

Opposition parties ODS, Pirate Party, KDU-CSL, TOP 09 and STAN hope for the vote to take place on Tuesday or Wednesday next week, parliamentary spokeswoman Anna Stepkova told CNN.

Babis is a divisive figure in the Czech Republic.

The billionaire tycoon first stormed into politics in 2012 and became Prime Minister in 2017. His populist ANO movement then received nearly 30% of the vote -- almost three times more than the conservative party ODS that came second.

The expected vote of no confidence comes after tens of thousands of Czechs took to the streets earlier this month to demand the resignation of Babis. He is accused of fraud and collaborating with the Communist era secret police.
