Fresh out of office, former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel jumps from politics into media

New York(CNN Business) Former Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel may no longer be serving in public office, but he'll still be in the public eye.

Emanuel, who left office as Chicago's 55th mayor on Monday, has signed a deal with ABC News, two people familiar with the matter told CNN on Tuesday. He will serve as an on-air contributor, the people said.

The Daily Beast was first to report the news.

Earlier in the day, The Atlantic announced that Emanuel will serve as a contributing editor. The magazine said in a press release that it will be the "primary home" for Emanuel's writing, and that he will be "contributing frequent essays."

Emanuel's first essay as an Atlantic contributing editor was published on Tuesday and titled, "It's Time to Hold American Elites Accountable for Their Abuses."

Emanuel has a long career in Democratic politics. He served as President Barack Obama's first White House chief of staff and prior to that chaired the House Democratic Caucus and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.
