(CNN) Businessman Andrew Yang raised $1.7 million during the first fundraising quarter of 2019, his presidential campaign announced Tuesday.
Yang's campaign said it had received contributions from 80,000 individual donors in February and March, though the Federal Election Commission reporting period covers the first three months of the year. Yang received more than $250,000 in contributions in the last four days of the quarter.
The campaign said the average donation was $17.92, and that 99% of the donations were less than $200.
Yang was among the first of the 2020 Democratic candidates to announce his first-quarter numbers after the end of the period Sunday night. Campaigns have until April 15 to file FEC disclosure reports with full details of their fundraising.
Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont announced that his presidential campaign had raised $18.2 million from 525,000 unique donors in the first quarter; Sen. Kamala Harris of California said she had raised $12 million from 138,000 donors in the period, and South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg said he had raised $7 million from 158,550 donors.
Yang's campaign manager, Zach Graumann, hailed the first quarter haul in a statement, writing that "an outsider candidate raising nearly $2 million in two months in entirely small contributions is unheard of. Andrew Yang has proven he can build an online fundraising army from scratch -- the Yang Gang effect is real."
Yang -- a 2020 dark horse with a background in tech investment who filed paperwork for his campaign as early November 2017 -- may have met one qualification for the first Democratic National Committee debates, set for June and July, by receiving campaign contributions from at least 65,000 individual donors; the donors also must be from at least 20 different states. To qualify for the debate, he must also meet a polling threshold, which requires candidates to reach 1% support in three separate polls.
