Mick Schumacher to make F1 test debut for Ferrari in Bahrain

(CNN) Mick Schumacher continues to follow in his father's considerable racing footsteps and will make his Formula 1 test debut in Ferrari colors in Bahrain this weekend.

The son of legendary driver Michael Schumacher -- who won five of his seven world titles in the famous red cars -- was signed by the Ferrari Devlopment Academy (FDA) earlier this year.

He is also scheduled to test drive for Ferrari on April 2 and Alfa Romeo (who Ferrari have a partnership with) on April 3 during the first in-season tests of 2019.

"I am obviously more than excited and would like to thank Ferrari for giving me this opportunity," the young Schumacher said. "I am really looking forward to what I'm sure will be a great experience."

Sebastian Vettel will join Schumacher as Ferrari's other driver for the first in-season test. Young British driver Callum Ilott will also test Ferrari's Formula 1 one car after May's Spanish Grand Prix.

"We are firm believers in the value of the Ferrari Driver Academy, as a high level training program for talented youngsters," said Team Principal Mattia Binotto.

"We are therefore very pleased to be able to give Mick and Callum the opportunity to experience driving a Formula 1 car.

"Mick, who joined the FDA in January, and Callum, who has been with us since 2017, are definitely drivers on their way up and I believe that driving the SF90 in an official setting such as the tests in Bahrain and Barcelona can be very useful at this stage in their career."

The 20-year-old Schumacher is the reigning Formula 3 champion and is also set to make his Formula 2 debut this weekend in Bahrain.
