Raul Labrador: Boehner worst speaker in history

Story highlights
  • Boehner called Cruz "Lucifer in the flesh" and a "miserable son of a bitch" on Thursday
  • "That was probably the unclassiest thing that I've ever seen somebody do in politics," Labrador said

Washington (CNN) Idaho Rep. Raul Labrador said Friday that John Boehner was "the worst speaker of the House in history."

Labrador, who is supporting Ted Cruz for president, made the comments to CNN's Wolf Blitzer on "The Situation Room" one day after Boehner called the Texas senator "Lucifer in the flesh" and a "miserable son of a bitch" in a withering interview at Stanford University published Thursday.

"That was probably the unclassiest thing that I've ever seen somebody do in politics. And in fact, it's not surprising to me," Labrador said.

"I've been pretty good at trying not to attack John Boehner on a personal basis, even though I thought he was the worst speaker of the House in history. He was a terrible leader. And now I think the gloves are off," Labrador added.

The comments come two days after former House Speaker Dennis Hastert was sentenced to 15 months in prison and admitted that he abused an unspecified number of boys.

Labrador said Republicans like Boehner would rather work with former Secretary of the State Hillary Clinton and Republican front-runner Donald Trump than a conservative like Ted Cruz.

"I think it's really kind of shameful that he would say such a thing about Ted Cruz," he said. "I think it's really, really sad to see a man do that in his later years. He should have kept his comments to himself instead of saying something like that."
