(CNN) Carly Fiorina and Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton might not agree on much these days, but eight years ago the former Hewlett-Packard CEO had glowing words for the then-New York senator on the campaign trail.

A GOP vice presidential candidate, Fiorina in 2008 described Clinton "incredibly intelligent, focused, tough, determined," in a video taken while the Californian was campaigning for then-GOP presidential nominee John McCain.

"I have such great admiration and empathy for Hillary Clinton," Fiorina said in the video. "I know what it takes in some small measure to do what she has done."

The video was first resurfaced this week by the website Dailymotion. Buzzfeed news also reported on Fiorina's comments last year.

The vice presidential candidate went on to sympathize with Clinton and other women office-holders.

"Women in positions of power, particularly bold women, who are trying to drive change as Hillary Clinton most surely is ... bold women, women in power are characterized, scrutinized, differently than their male counterparts are," she said.

A Fiorina spokesperson said the vice presidential candidate "thinks Hillary is smart and hardworking, but she also believes she is profoundly misguided on the important issues facing this country."

"I never make a personal comment about Hillary Clinton -- my criticism of her is fact-based, based on her actions and track record. And that is fair game," Fiorina said in a People Magazine interview last October.

Fiorina has criticized Clinton for playing the "woman card" during the 2016 campaign.

"Hillary Clinton, first of all, calls everybody a sexist and that's not fair game," Fiorina said last year on Fox News.

Fiorina has also gone after Clinton's marriage and Bill Clinton's infidelity.

"If my husband had done some of the things Bill Clinton had done, I would have left him long ago," Fiorina told MSNBC in December.

In a 2015 CNN op-ed, the then-presidential candidate said Clinton has yet to name "one accomplishment."
