(CNN) An early-morning police operation in the suburbs of Paris turned violent as gunfire and explosions rang out in the area of Saint-Denis.
Five French officers were lightly wounded and a police dog was killed in the raid, according to officials.
As people are still coming to grips with the death of 129 people in the multiple terrorist attacks that struck Paris last week, mourners have also paid tribute to the police dog's service on social media.
Diesel, a 7-year-old Belgian Malinois, died during the raid, French police tweeted.
The hashtag #JeSuisChien was trending on Twitter following the attack, in honor of the French police dog.
The Belgian Malinois is one of the breeds most commonly used as police dogs, according to the National Police Dog Foundation.
Two U.S. Secret Service Malinois apprehended a man last year after he jumped a fence at the White House.
Wednesday's raid in Saint-Denis ended with two suspected terrorists dead, seven detained, and a potential attack thwarted, according to French President Francois Hollande.
